The Lexicon of Knife Terminology is handy alphabetic list of some of the common words and phrases you’ll run into while looking for a knife. It includes such things as knife patterns, steel types and comparisons, words used to describe knives, etc.

The Who Owns Who gives some brief information about the multitude of brand names on the market today as well as some information on who actually owns the brands. This is helpful becuase in some cases one company will produce several different brands of knives. 

If that isn't enough, I suggest the two online knife groups who are freindly toward novice and seasoned collectors alike.
